COPA has worked with the charity Project Trust, who provide challenging and rewarding gap years for school leavers, since 1998.
Project Trust organises voluntary placements of eight months or a year in Africa, Asia and Latin America for young people.
In the Dominican Republic, Project Trust volunteers work in La Hoya and Bombita as English and Art teachers, living alongside the long-term volunteers and fully participating in community life. There is also plenty of time to travel and see the rest of the Dominican Republic, as well as further afield with recent volunteers having travelled to Cuba during the school holidays.
Our Project Trust volunteers have gone on to study at universities across the UK and abroad, and to work in education, international development and government. There is also the opportunity for returned volunteers to remain involved with COPA through sponsoring a child or joining the UK Executive Committee.
Project Trust recruit volunteers in their penultimate or final year of school, and invites them to attend a selection course on the beautiful island of Coll off the west coast of Scotland. During this course, potential volunteers find out more about the different countries and communities in which they could volunteer, as well as receiving advice and support on fundraising and preparing for a year overseas.
